While there is no cure as of yet for parkinson’s, there are a number of medications and therapies which can help treat this illness.  So what are a few changes you can make to your daily diet and routine in order to feel better?

Processed foods cause a lot of health problems in modern western society, so it is a good idea to eliminate such foods such as white flower, sugar, and excess fats from your diet.  Some foods that are good bets include plenty of fruits and vegetables and be advised that purchasing food products with pesticides in them can aggravate your PD symptoms.

In fact, a number of different preliminary studies have shown that eating vegetables high in anti-oxidants can offer some relief from parkinson’s symptoms.  It is also a good idea to take calcium in order to prevent osteoporosis and serious damage to the bones which is common as parkinson’s progresses.

Despite common myths that protein should not be a big part of the diet of someone with parkinson’s, you should try to make sure to get adequate amounts of protein but only in take it at particular times.  So how can you arrange eating adequate amounts of protein and not have your medication regimen affected?  All you have to do is take your medication aways before you start eating.

Remember that levodopa is an amino acid, and the body breaks high protein foods down into amino acids and combining the two can impact the absorption of certain medications.  Usually taking your medication half an hour before you decide to eat is inadequate time in order to absorb most of the medication.

Coenzyme Q10 it is produced by the body, but people who have parkinson’s disease will usually not produce enough of this enzyme.  The National Institute of Health is still conducting studies as to the effectiveness of this nutritional supplement but early results are highly promising.  Q10 is known to have no negative side effects, so taking a supplement certainly can’t hurt.

Moving on to vitamins, can these types of supplements help in treating PD?  A good multi-vitamin is key to proper health, especially as you are aging.  Vitamin D is helpful in order to help you absorb calcium to prevent osteoporosis, and Vitamin E may also be effective in treating parkinson’s disease, which has been shown in some studies to reduce the progression of the illness.  It is possible to overdose on vitamin E see you may want to start off with lower doses or ask your doctor.

Vitamins are expected to act in the treatment of parkinson’s by eliminating free radicals in the body, and eating a healthy diet and getting a small amount of exercise is certainly helpful for everyone, not just those suffering from parkinson’s symptoms.
