Many women with multiple sclerosis wonder how this illness will affect their chances of becoming pregnant, with regards to such factors as their fertility.  There is actually a lot of good news regarding pregnancy and MS, because fertility is not at all affected by this illness.

The bad news is that there are a number of medications used to treat this illness such as anti convulsions and antibiotics which can interfere with the normal healthy development of a child.

If you are not trying to get pregnant and you are taking multiple sclerosis drugs, it is important to remember that birth control is weakened by the other medications that you are taking.  So if you are wanting to get pregnant, you may want to ask for special birth control that is much stronger than than normal.  In addition, if you are trying to get pregnant, it is usually a bad idea to just stop taking your medications without asking a doctor first.  But what about men? Do they suffer with sexual dysfunction and MS? Yes, but this is easily treatable with drugs.

There are a number of women with MS who enjoy being pregnant because it is common to experience a partial remission of symptoms, especially as the pregnancy progresses due to hormones which will surpress the immune system. This effect only lasts throughout the pregnancy though.  Because MS is an autoimmune disorder many women with MS say they feel great while they are pregnant.

You have to be careful though as complete relapse can occur right after pregnancy, which can be stressful when dealing with a new member of the family.  Women with multiple sclerosis symptoms also have a much easier time delivering babies and they don’t need anesthesia as frequently.

So will women with multiple sclerosis have healthy babies? The risk of passing on MS is increased by about 3-5 percent if the mother has the illness, but this is a very low risk and it is worth taking if you decide you want to start a family.  Will you be able to breast feed your child? Breastfeeding is no problem, but it can be physically exhuasting.

Most women decide they want to become mothers at some point in their life, and you shouldn’t let your multiple sclerosis illness stop you from enjoying bringing a new life into the world.  Still, an MS pregnancy is different than that of a healthy woman so it is a good idea to enlist the help of a neurologist who has experience in helping MS women with pregnancy.
